Threads of pure grace

A strong, sovereign hand. I see it everywhere now.

When I run across an ancient Chinese proverb which reads, "An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but it will never break."
As I read in Jane Eyre where Mr. Rouchester says of Jane, "It feels as though I had a string tied here under my left rib where my heart is, tightly knotted to you in a similar fashion. And when you go to Ireland, with all that distance between us, I am afraid that this cord will be snapped, and I shall bleed inwardly.”

I see his strong, sovereign hand in the connection between people and such thoughts in literature resonate with me. It resonates with us all because we have seen and felt it in ourselves. Those who enter our lives, some for only a moment, while others for a lifetime, and we know it is not a coincidence. Simple proverb or creative fairy tale it is not; it is the reality of life…. the reality of truth….the reality of a true, living and working God.
His word tells us in Acts 17:26 that we live in the time and place which he ordained for us. Katharine Hepburn once said that she was lucky to "belong to the era that she was born in." But the truth is we are all exactly where we are meant to be because of his sovereign hand, even when we feel like we don’t belong. Our days are ordained for us- from the first to the last. Our dwelling place is ordained for us- from where we breathe our first breath to our last and everyone in between. Our acquaintances, our life long loves, our foes... all ordained for us. Even beyond that our great God causes all the events of life- the good and bad, the beautiful and the ugly... all of the people- those who love us and those who despise... all of every single particular of life to amazingly work together for our good and his glory.

A great songwriter friend once wrote of the tapestry God weaves in our lives:
Every step, every breath in a perfectly woven Tapestry
Before time began, all praise and glory to my God
Every perfect strand, ordained by God’s hand,
There are no patches to his plan.

I recognized this truth the first time most vividly in the beauty of adoption. Dear friends who, by God’s call and plan, chose to adopt a child that they had never seen, but that God had purposed to be a part of their family…. before all time began in his perfectly woven tapestry.

And later, as dear friends moved away, I saw the hand of God weaving his tapestry once again.

And now I see it again with greater pain, but with an even greater trust in his strong, sovereign, loving hand, as I grieve the loss of my mother. who by all other accounts passed on too young in life at the age of 55 but God....

But God… what glorious, glorious words to ponder…But God knew, he saw, he ordained and he is too wise to be mistaken and too loving to be unkind. There are truly no patches to his plan. And it is all pure grace. Here, when time allows amongst marriage, children, ministry, homeschooling and the general busyness of life, you will find my feeble attempt to glory in the threads of pure grace and to trust and honor my ever wise God who is weaving a perfect, patchless tapestry.

My prayer as you read is that you see his threads of pure grace more clearly in your life and glory in them as well...
